About ACIL
The Appalachian Center for Independent Living (ACIL) is a nonprofit organization dedicated to empowering people with disabilities to live independently and participate fully in their communities. Since 1982, ACIL has provided advocacy, skills training, peer support, and transition services across West Virginia.
Through its Freedom Path Transportation Program, ACIL provides safe, reliable, and accessible transportation for individuals with disabilities, supporting their independence and access to essential community resources.
Position Summary
Van Drivers are responsible for providing safe, courteous, and dependable transportation for individuals with disabilities to non-emergency destinations such as medical appointments, grocery stores, and banks. Drivers ensure the safety, comfort, and dignity of all passengers while promoting ACIL’s mission of independence and inclusion.
Part-Time schedules are available.

Key Responsibilities
• Safely operate accessible vans to transport passengers to and from scheduled destinations.
• Assist passengers entering and exiting the vehicle, including proper use of wheelchair lifts, ramps, and securements.
• Ensure the safety, comfort, and respect of all passengers during transport.
• Conduct daily pre- and post-trip vehicle inspections; report maintenance issues promptly.
• Maintain accurate mileage logs, trip records, and consumer documentation.
• Follow all traffic laws, safety regulations, and ACIL transportation procedures.
• Communicate courteously and professionally with consumers, caregivers, and staff.
• Support ACIL’s mission by promoting accessibility, independence, and inclusion in every interaction.
• Perform additional duties related to transportation and program operations as assigned.
Qualifications
• High school diploma or equivalent.
• Valid West Virginia driver’s license with a clean driving record.
• Must be at least 21 years of age.
• Must pass a background check, driving record report, and pre-employment drug screening.
• Experience working with individuals with disabilities preferred.
• Ability to lift up to 50 lbs and assist passengers with mobility devices.

Schedule:
• Part-Time: Flexible schedule, approximately 20–25 hours per week, based on consumer needs.

This is a volunteer, unpaid position, ideal for individuals who want to make a meaningful difference while serving alongside others dedicated to inclusion and empowerment. The board meets every other month at the ACIL office in Big Chimney, WV. Video call options for meeting participation is available.
