The ROADMAP

Your Journey to the Future Begins Here

Step 1 - Your Future Awaits

Are you ready to think about what's next?

ACIL's mission is to serve:

  • High school students with disabilities (ages 14–21)
  • Adults and Veterans with disabilities
  • Senior adults  - we help you explore options to live in your own home with support and skills to maintain safety, encourage mobility, accessibility,  and independence, rather than move into a long-term care center.

The 5 Steps are your plan for the future. You can create a plan that pursues your interests, needs and dreams.

Step 2 - Learn Life's Key Skills

Whether preparing to live or make decisions on your own for the first time or decide to remain in your home with support to maintain your independence, you will work with a specialist to help create a custom plan to learn the skills you need for a successful life. This can include:

  • Exploring community resources to meet your specific needs.
  • Exploring safe, accessible and affordable housing options.
  • Creating a budget and managing your money.
  • Planning and cooking healthy meals.
  • Handling basic cleaning and laundry.
  • Taking care of yourself.
  • Managing your health and mental health services.
  • Finding transportation options or learning how to use the bus and read the schedules.
  • Learn about emergency preparedness and safety.
  • Time and stress management.
  • Decision making and problem solving.
  • And so much more depending on your needs...

Step 3 - Find a Job or Career That Inspires You

This is an optional step for those with an interest.

We want you to find a job you love, one that gives you a sense of purpose. Our specialists will help you explore your interests and discover what truly motivates you. We'll also teach you the "soft skills" you need to find a job, write a resume, and ace an interview. Thanks to our community connections, we can guide you to the job that's the perfect fit for you.

For those interested in higher education, we'll encourage you every step of the way. With inclusive programs now available at many colleges, students of all abilities can enjoy the full college experience. We'll connect you with our partners in higher education and support you through the whole process, from applying to graduating with confidence.

Step 4: Become Your Own Best Advocate

It's important to know your rights as a person with a disability. In this step, we'll teach you how to speak up for yourself and find help when you need it. We'll mentor you and be by your side as you learn how to use your voice for yourself and for the disability community.

Step 5: Connect with Your Peers and the Community

Having a great support system is a huge part of being independent. We're building a network of people who can be mentors and friends who understand your journey.

Have you ever wanted to make a difference in your community?   We can find volunteer opportunities that fit your interests and build a sense of purpose.

We'll bring people together to support disability advocacy issues, share interests and have fun, and we're always looking for new ways to get out and enjoy the community.
